So, I have a 3 car garage, with a single 150w bulb in the center to light it all. Its pathetic. I need to upgrade. Lets talk garage lighting... What’s your setup?

I’ve got a wide single car garage. Standard two tube fluorescent over the work bench, two ~150 watt incandescent on centerline, a 60W curly cue in the opener, and two of those 1500W pairs of halogens on stands that I move around to wherever I need the blinding light of the sun (plus bonus heat in winter).

If you aren’t using an Arrisun 120, there won’t be enough light.

I had that exactly, I just wanted a quick improvement without rewiring or a lot of cost so I replaced the bulb with an LED troffer from home depot. It’s not ideal since it’s still just one center light source but it’s so much brighter.

I had only 4 light bulbs for a 2 1/2 car garage. I changed them to these shop lights with LEDs and it’s amazing

I also hate our garage lights. For a two-car garage, there is a two-bulb fluorescent fixture mounted in the center with the standard incandescent in the garage door opener.
The garage is full of not-car-related “exercise” equipment and storage for all our junk. This is what happens when you downsize your house, but not your stuff.
All car-related work is performed on the driveway under the shade of a pop-up canopy when it is sunny and lighted with a portable halogen work lamp when it is not.

If you’re doing any detailing, fluorescent lights are relentless for finding paint defects. It will help you avoid that “looks great in the garage, let’s see how it looks in the sun” feeling.

“Bought a $15k stage lamp so I could detail my $5k civic better”

I’ve got four of those two-bulb 4’ fluorescent fixtures, plus 5 150W-equivalent CFL bulbs located around the garage. It’s “pretty good,” but I honestly could use some more. I would like to get a couple retractable work lights that I can place where I need extra light for a temporary project (like working under the hood) but overall it’s adequate general purpose coverage.

Long runs of 8’ fluorescent, and in the paint studio, hanging 4’ fluorescent mixed with some on the wall.

My current lighting setup is also pathetic. For my single-car, narrow garage, I have one bulb on the wall. That’s it. There’s another on the opener, but we can’t figure out how to turn it on.
I just did a pretty hefty service on my car, and I used my reading lamp, a trouble light, and an LED headlamp, plus the light on the wall. Pretty lame.
My plan is to put up white pegboard all around to reflect more light, and grab 5 of the $35 Costco LED tube lights. I’ll arrange them in an H pattern.
I also want to get a decent creeper and fix some cheap battery powered LED lamps to it for work under the car.

LED is the way to go.

The sun. My garage has no electricity and I think it was originally built in the 1930’s. That said, the ideal is to have 2-4 hanging fluorescent lamps depending on the size of the space.

One bulb per stall. And a diamond plate steel fluorescent light over my workbench.

When I get around to upgrading from my lame 1 light bulb in my cramp 2 car garage I’ll be going with something like these:

EDIT: just found these at HomeDepot, seems like a good deal

The owner of the house before me used the garage as a shop, and installed 7 of the old school 4 light t12 fluorescent light fixtures that I’m pretty sure were taken out of a school garbage bin. The ballasts are failing in almost all of them, save for one over the work bench. Basically my garage looks like a low budget horror movie. Until I have the budget to update the entire garage (WOO! 1970’s wood paneling and no GFCIs!), I’m dealing with it.

I always want to change mine out for LEDs and do something like these garages.

I have two hundred watt bulbs in two car garage. All you really need is a good portable treble light or an led rechargeable one
